An association of prostitutes said Tuesday that it is offering its members free language courses in preparation for the expected influx of international clients next year when Brazil hosts the soccer World Cup.

The program is an initiative of Aprosmig, a group representing sex workers in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais.

Like other Brazilian industries, the sex trade wants to become more competitive ahead of the 2014 World Cup, Aprosmig president Cida Vieira told Efe.

“If all the sectors are preparing for the Cup, why not us?,” she said.

Classes are expected to begin February or March at a venue provided by another organization active in the red-light district of Belo Horizonte, the state capital and center of Brazil’s third-most-populous metropolitan area.

The program will rely initially on volunteer teachers, but Vieira said she hopes to create a more solid structure with paid staff.

A score of sex workers have signed up for the language classes and Aprosmig expects as many as 300 to take advantage of the program, she said.
