All eight people aboard were killed when a police helicopter crashed in the central Brazilian state of Goias, authorities said.
One of the fatalities was a man described as the prime suspect in the gruesome murders of seven people found decapitated on a farm near the town of Doverlandia.
The chopper went down late Tuesday while returning to Goiania, the state capital, from the Doverlandia area, where police took the suspect as part of their investigation of last month’s slaughter.
“The government of Goias deeply regrets the death of the inspectors and employees of the Public Safety Department,” Gov. Marconi Perillo said in a statement.
A police source told news Web site G1 that suspect Aparecido Souza Alves, 22, was among those killed in the crash.
Killed in the April 29 massacre near Doverlandia were the property’s 57-year-old owner, his 22-year-old son, a farm employee and four neighbors who had come to the house to present a wedding gift.
Police suspect the landowner, his son and the employee were the targets of the attack and that the visiting neighbors just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
