Norberto Odebrecht, an engineer who founded one of Brazil’s largest construction companies, died in Salvador, the capital of Bahia state, Odebrecht Group representatives told the press Sunday. He was 93.
Odebrecht, born in Recife on Oct. 9, 1920, died on Saturday.
The businessman had been hospitalized for treatment of heart problems.
Odebrecht founded his construction company in 1944, building the firm into a conglomerate that now operates in 23 countries and employs nearly 200,000 people.
He created the Odebrecht Foundation in 1965 to promote social development projects in the northeastern state of Bahia.
Norberto Odebrecht stepped down as Odebrecht S.A.‘s CEO in 1991 and was succeeded by his son, Emilio Odebrecht.
He served on the company’s board of directors and held the title of honorary chairman.
Odebrecht will be buried on Sunday in Bahia.
