The Bolivian government announced yesterday that it will be donating 3,000 metric tons of rice, worth about US$ 2 million to Cuba. The natural disasters of 2008 that damaged the crop production is still affecting the island. In addition to the humanitarian relief the donation will bring, it will also benefit producers of the crop who are experiencing a lack of demand.
The first 500,000 kilos of the donation were shipped to Cuba last week. Future plans are to send 60,000 bags of rice per month.
The projected surplus of rice this year in Bolivia is 70,000 metric tons.
