State police said they had re-established control in an cell block of La Pila prison in the state capital of San Luis Potosi after a fight broke out between prisoners, according to a posting on the security ministry’s official social media page.
The attorney General of San Luis Potasi confirmed that a brawl at The Center for Prevention and Rehabilitation left at least one dozen inmates dead and fifty more were hospitalized with injuries.
Several Red Cross ambulances rushed to the scene to give aid to the survivors.
More than three hours after the incident started, the authorities reported that they had regained control of the building; all access to the facility is currently denied pending an investigation.
