Joaquin Guzman Loera, aka El Chapo, was arrested on last Saturday February 22 in Mazatlan but not before a very close escape to one of his houses in Culiacán, through a hidden tunnel.
Mexicans Marine, with the assistance of. U.S. authorities gave chase but lost the fugitive through a maze of tunnels under the city just before his famous arrest. In every house, the Mexican military found the same thing: reinforced steel doors and an escape hatch under the bathtubs. Each hatch led to a series of interconnected tunnels within the drainage system of the city.
In one of the houses they found a flap that exposed the newly constructed tunnel. Large and lined with wood paneling, like a cabin, the passageway had lighting and air conditioning. At the end of the tunnel was a blue ladder against the wall leading to a house that Mexican authorities say Guzman used as a hideout.
