The mutilated body of a woman was found stuffed in a suitcase abandoned at a Mexico City Metro station, Federal District Public Safety Secretary Jesus Rodriguez Almeida said.
Investigators are trying to determine who left the suitcase and a sign in a passageway leading to a stairway at the San Antonio Metro station in western Mexico City on Saturday night, Rodriguez Almeida told reporters.
Investigators plan to review videos from security cameras at the station and other parts of the city, the public safety secretary said.
“As I understand it, the person (who abandoned the suitcase) was spotted around the El Rosario station near the border with Mexico state,” Rodriguez Almeida said.
Mexico state surrounds the Federal District and forms part of the Mexico City metropolitan area.
“We are not ruling out that the suitcase may have come from there,” Rodriguez Almeida said. “We are going to wait until the prosecutors are done (with the investigation).”
The coroner’s office will determine how the unidentified victim was killed, Rodriguez Almeida said.
“Obviously, we are focusing on whether someone is missing, be it in the capital or some other federal entity, to figure out who we are dealing with,” the public safety secretary said.
The woman found in the suitcase was about 30 and had been beheaded and mutilated, media reports said.
