The leader of the Los Caballeros Templarios (Knights Templar) drug cartel said in a video uploaded to YouTube that Mexican ex-President Felipe Calderon’s sister approached his criminal organization during the 2011 gubernatorial campaign in the western state of Michoacan.

Servando Gomez, alias “La Tuta” and one of Mexico’s most-wanted drug lords, “categorically” denied allegations by Calderon’s sister, Sen. Luisa Maria Calderon of the conservative National Action Party, or PAN, that his organization has held secret talks with the current Michoacan government.

“It’s not true,” he said, adding that “the only person who approached us” during the 2011 gubernatorial campaign in Michoacan “was Ms. Luisa Maria Calderon,” who was defeated in that balloting by current Gov. Fausto Vallejo Figueroa.

He said a candidate for the state legislature, Francisco Giron del Toro, approached Los Caballeros Templarios on her behalf on three occasions, the last time two days before the election to say that she “would respect us and that we were on the same page” and that “everything had been forgotten.”

“I got a little upset and we had a message sent telling them that we didn’t want deals with anybody, with no political party, and may the best one win,” Gomez said on the video, in which he appears alone and is wearing a black shirt and cap.

Los Caballeros, a breakaway faction of the La Familia Michoacana mob, was founded in March 2011 after the death three months earlier of La Familia kingpin Nazario Moreno Gonzalez in a clash with security forces.

The cartel quickly came to dominate the illegal drug trade in Michoacan and has extended its area of influence to other Mexican regions.

Felipe Calderon served as Mexican president from December 2006 until late last year.
