One Miss South Carolina contestant has a particularly difficult climb to the podium, but that has not deterred her from representing those fighting for acceptance.

Analouisa Valencia, 19, is the daughter of a Mexican-born father and an Africa-American mother, making her ethnicity somewhat controversial in such a conservative state. Also, in her first year of high school, Valencia came out as a lesbian.

In a recent interview with The Advocate, Valencia said she is ready to be “an advocate for equality,” saying, ‘I want to show the judges who I really am…I’ve experienced a lot of things in life. A lot of negativity. I’ve seen a lot of people get bullied, so I try to be on the up side of things.”

The Miss South Carolina pageant is far from her introduction to the pageant world. In 2000, she won Mis South Carolina Princess for Miss Spartanburg and she is currently Miss Lyman, South Carolina.

In July, Valencia will head to the state capital hoping to be crowned Miss South Carolina. Should she win, she would move on to compete for the Miss America crown.
