Kevin de Bruyne celebrated his 23rd birthday three days late in Salvador, Brazil Tuesday, scoring the first of Belgium’s two goals in a 2-1 overtime win over the United States in the World Cup Round of 16.
The Belgian striker, who had two chances in the first half, broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 93rd minute.
Entering the match early in the first overtime, Romelu Lukaku gave the Belgians what looked like a safe 2-0 lead with a goal in the 105th minute.
But Julian Green, who came on for Alejandro Bedoya, needed only two minutes to cut the lead in half with a goal at the 107-minute mark.
Green’s tally was the signal for a relentless U.S. onslaught that fell just short of putting another one past Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to force a penalty shootout.
The European side will face Argentina in the quarterfinals.
