Photo: In theaters today: Elysium, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters - Coming Soon: Kick-Ass 2
Now that the weekend is finally upon us, let’s take a look at what’s opening in theaters.
-Stars: Matt Damon, Diego Luna, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Sharito Copley, Alice Braga, Wagner Moura
-Genre: Drama, Science Fiction & Fantasy
-The gist: In the year 2154 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes, a government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters
-Stars: Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Jake Abel, Anthony Head, Stanley Tucci, Nathan Fillion
-Genre: Fantasy, Adventure
-The gist: In this retelling of Rick Riordans book, “The Sea of Monsters”, Percy Jackson, accompanied by his friends Annabeth Chase, Clarisse La Rue and Tyson, his half brother, goes on a journey to the Sea of Monsters to retrieve the Golden Fleece and save Camp Half-Blood.
-Stars: Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Sharon Stone, Robert Patrick, Juno Temple, Chris Noth
-The gist: In 1972-before the internet, before the porn explosion-Deep Throat was a phenomenon: the first scripted pornographic theatrical feature film, featuring a story, some jokes, and an unknown and unlikely star, Linda Lovelace. Escaping a strict religious family, Linda discovered freedom and the highlife when she fell for and married charismatic hustler Chuck Traynor. As Linda Lovelace she became an international sensation-less centerfold fantasy than a charming girl-next-door with an impressive capacity for fellatio. Fully inhabiting her new identity, Linda became an enthusiastic spokesperson for sexual freedom and uninhibited hedonism. Six years later she presented another, utterly contradictory, narrative to the world-and herself as the survivor of a far darker story.
-Stars: Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Priyanka Chopra, John Cleese
-Genre: Animated, Family, Comedy
-The gist: Cars gets a spin-off with this Disney Toon Studios film starring the voice of Dane Cook as a vertically-challenged plane with high hopes of becoming an air racer.
