A 5.9 earthquake measured by the U.S. Geological Survey struck the Chinese region of Gansu killing at least 90 and injuring 500.  The Chinese earthquake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 6 miles.

Around the same time in another part of the world the South American continent was also hit by earthquakes.

Argentina was struck by a 5.4 earthquake near the town of Santa Cruz approximately 4 hours ago.  At the same time Chile was affected by a 5.0-magnitude earthquake near Copiapo, Chile.

Santa Cruz located in the southern portion of the country is near the Chilean border

The Chile-Argentina border suffered a massive 8.5 earthquake back in 1922 where several hundred lives were lost when a tsunami wiped out several Chilean cities.  Most recently this region was struck by 4.4 magnitude earthquake on July 7, 2013.
