Competitiveness can really get the best of players sometimes, causing some to release frustration in inappropriate ways. (See John McEnroe)
Argentine tennis player David Nalbandian found out just how important it is to release that energy appropriately, as his kicking landed him a forfeit during his Sunday match at Queen’s Club in London.
Though leading at the time, Nalbandian was having a tantrum and took it out on an advertising board. When he kicked the board however, he managed to injure a line judge by sending the board in to the lineman’s shin. This outburst came after he had already frustratedly banged his racket on a few times during the match, and one of the commentators initially thought it was Nalbandian’s racket that hit the judge.
For unsportsmanlike conduct, Nalbandian was disqualified.
Metropolitan police are now investigating the incident and will determine if Nalbandian will face assault charges.
