The Venezuelan director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel, inaugurated the Americas & Americans festival, a tribute to different Latin American sounds and musical traditions with a touch of classical music.

Dudamel and Dominican singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra opened the recitals that will be held daily until next Sunday.

On Wednesday, it will be the turn of Ruben Blades, along with Eddie Palmieri, a day later Dudamel will return with his philharmonic orchestra and on Friday and Saturday Colombia’s Juanes will perform along with the Hollywood Bowl orchestra.

The festival will wrap up on Sunday with Dudamel’s first collaboration with Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, the director of the Los Angeles Opera.

Dudamel was named director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the end of 2009 and the next year he organized the first edition of Americas & Americans in the Disney Concert Hall, a project whereby he wanted to make the U.S. public more familiar with Latin American rhythms.
