FC Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova returned to Spain on Tuesday after a 10-week stay in New York to undergo treatment for throat cancer, the club said.
The 44-year-old Catalan arrived at Barcelona’s El Prat International Airport at 8:30 a.m. and went straight home to rest, club management said.
No date has been set for Vilanova’s return to coaching duties, a Barça spokesperson told Efe.
The club has a practice scheduled for Tuesday, but most of the players are away on international duty. It remains unclear whether Vilanova will be on the sideline for the club’s La Liga match with Celta this weekend.
Barcelona’s plan calls for Vilanova to gradually resume his responsibilities as head coach.
Club personnel whisked Vilanova out of the airport through a special exit to avoid the throng of reporters waiting outside the terminal.
Barça released photos of a smiling Vilanova flanked by his assistants and a pair of Civil Guard officers.
Vilanova was first diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and underwent surgery. But the tumor returned and he had to have a second operation in December.
