Photo: After Being Accidentally Run Over by Mother, 8-Year-Old Girl Dies
The 8-year-old daughter of Maria Anna Cruz-Lopez succumbed to injuries Friday after she and four other children were run over by her mother.
Cruz-Lopez, 33, was reportedly backing a large SUV into the driveway when she hit the children, who range in age from 18 months to 11 years old.
A family friend says Cruz-Lopez did not see the children when she accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the break and lodged the Ford Expedition in the brick garage. The 8-year-old girl, Natalie Hernandez-Cruz, was injured not only by the vehicle itself, but by the bricks that fell when the SUV hit the garage.
All of the children were taken to Children’s Hospital. Friday morning, police said that the driver’s son, the youngest in the collision, is in ‘stable’ condition. A six-year-old boy and seven-year-old girl are also in ‘stable’ condition. An 11-year-old child is in serious condition, said police.
Police were able to respond quickly, as they were still in the neighborhood after being called to the residence not an hour prior. Shortly before the tragic accident, police had been called because Cruz-Lopez was illegally living in the home. She was said to be backing the vehicle into the driveway because she was moving.
Though drugs and alcohol were not believed to have been a factor in the accident, Cruz-Lopez was cited, as she did not have a license and was not using a car seat.
