Aetna Inc. is addressing the lack of ethnic diversity amongst physicians by allocating $454,000 to seek and promote the next generation of ethnically diverse U.S. physicians.
Through the Aetna Foundation, the company will use monies to support educational opportunities for minorities who are interested in the medical field – that support will go to minority students as young as middle school age.
Aetna is concerned that the current number of U.S. physicians and their ethnic background does not reflect the population mix in the country. For example, Hispanics represented 15 percent of the population but only 5 percent of all doctors are Hispanic.
Aetna is starting its initiative with a gift of $100,000 to the United Negro College Fund.
