Controversy ensued when the Secretary of Public Safety , Ramón Almonte Borja put up an ad looking for women 18 to 26, 5-foot-5 with weight proportional to height, and in good physical health, to become cops.

“The idea is to have a women only police corps, preferably sexy ones, to become an icon of the city […] we’re designing a striking uniform, so as to distinguish us like police in London, for example, so that Acapulco can have an additional visual attraction to what we already have,” said Almonte.

Currently, there are more than 120 unfilled officer positions to be filled by these bomb-shell cops who would not be armed, and whose function would be mostly to act as tourist guides.

Women rights organizations have expressed outrage at what they consider a sexist idea; Blanca Rico, executive director of Semillas in Mexico City, described the position of her women’s rights group as “indignant.”

“Once again women are put in the stereotype of being decorations,” she reportedly said. “One would never imagine male police officers being selected for their looks.”

Asked if he consider his proposal somewhat sexist and exclusive, Almonte said that as with any job, there are certain requisites that applicants must adhere to and qualifications that they need to possess.

“It will not only be a pretty face,” Almonte said, “they also must have characteristics that enable them to help tourists, like the command of a second language,” he said.
