The Spanish-flagged merchant ship Bouga rescued Saturday 93 migrants who were in trouble at sea near the southwestern Italian island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean, at the petition of the Italian coast guard.

A spokesman for Maritime Rescue told Efe that the Spanish ship was sailing from Gabes, Tunisia, toward Bilbao in northern Spain, when it was redirected from the rescue center in Rome to an area southwest of Lampedusa where 93 migrants were in need of help.

The vessel rescued 28 children, 18 women and 47 men, whose country of origin and state of health are unknown, and plans to dock tomorrow at the northwestern Sicilian city of Trapani, where the migrants will be disembarked.
