Chile’s Lucho Gatica doesn’t fear death because, as he himself says, he has done all he had to do in this world, including getting married three times, being the dad of seven kids and publishing more than 1,000 discs. But in his 85th year he is still looking for a bolero for his final adieu.

It will “most probably” be a bitter song, he said in an interview with Efe in Los Angeles, because those are the ones, written between pain and nostalgia, that in his opinion leave the best taste.

“I hope I find a song that lets me say ‘this is my last song,’ the kind you sing when you’re dying,” said the Chilean, who through five decades has immortalized numbers like “Reloj,” “La Barca” and “Historia de un Amor,” the latter a title that is also the name of his new project, an album of duets that goes on sale Nov. 12.

He has partnered his calm, velvety voice with vocals by Laura Pausini, Beto Cuevas, Nelly Furtado, Michael Buble, Il Volo, Luis Fonsi, Pepe Aguilar, Lucero, Miguel Bose, Olga TaƱon and Ricardo Montaner, to leave 21st-century fans the musical legacy of one who was christened “king of the bolero.”

“There’s less romanticism now, that I can guarantee, but we have to accept that today’s youth has other rhythms, other styles. I respect that because I believe every artist has his time. I was given a wonderful one,” Gatica said.
