Authorities suspect that gangs were behind the recent killings of eight children in the northern city of San Pedro Sula, Honduras’ attorney general said Friday.

Prosecutors are “investigating the reason” for the murders, Oscar Chinchilla told reporters.

In the space of less than a month, eight kids have been kidnapped and slain in San Pedro Sula, the country’s second city and business hub.

Keneth Alejandro Castellanos, 7, was found dead Thursday near his family’s home in the La Pradera slum.

Police discovered the body of Keneth’s 13-year-old brother, Antony, on Wednesday.

Authorities “are working” on the case, the attorney general said, asking the press to “understand why some advances in the investigation cannot be revealed for now.”

One theory is that the boys were abducted by gangs and then killed when they refused to join the criminal outfits, Chinchilla said.

Both of Central America’s largest and most feared gangs, Mara 18 and Mara Salvatrucha, have operations in Honduras, which has become one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

Honduras suffers an average of 15 homicides a day, according to the government, which attributes most of the violence to the gangs, who deal drugs and extort “taxes” from transit operators and small businesses.
