Oklahoma officials are reporting approximately 7,000 dental patients of Dr. W. Scott Harrington of Tulsa and Owasso, Oklahoma could have been exposed to the HIV or hepatitis virus.

Patients possibly infected are being notified by the Oklahoma State Board of Dentistry and Health Department. The infection exposure possibly occurred as far back as 6 years ago.

Harrington who is also an oral surgeon operates two dental facilities and both are under investigation and currently closed.  He surrendered his medical license on March 20, 2013.

Dr. Harrington’s practice came under investigation when there were reports of poor safety and hygiene at the dental and oral surgery practice.  Harrington, who is fully cooperating with authorities, allegedly did not properly clean his dental tools in spite of knowing he had a high volume of patients diagnosed with HIV and hepatitis.  Some of the offices sterilization equipment was also found not to be working.

The investigation is so vast that several federal agencies are assisting Oklahoma officials. Harrington has been a practicing dentist for 36 years.

Oklahoma has set up free testing clinics for the 7,000 patients and anyone else who might have been a patient of Dr. Harrington.  The free testing will begin this Saturday morning.
