7.4 Earthquake Hits Coast of El Salvador, Tsunami Warning for Portions of Latin America

The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a 7.4 earthquake off the coast of El Salvador, 110 miles southeast of the country’s capital of San Salvador, occurring late Sunday with early Monday morning aftershocks.

The strong quake occurred 33 miles under the sea between the Cocos and Caribbean plates.  This plate boundary region has experienced over 20 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater over the past 40 years; three of these had magnitudes greater than 7.

There have been no reports of injures or damages though the earthquake was felt in El Salvador. There have also been reports of a 5.4 aftershock in El Salvador with no injuries or damages.

There are now tsunami warnings for portions of Central and Latin America that include Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama.
