At least seven people died and 10 were injured Wednesday when a bus collided with a cargo truck on a highway in the western state of Michoacan, Mexican authorities said.
The accident occurred in the wee hours at Kilometer 193 on the 21st Century Highway as the bus was traveling from Guadalajara, the capital of the state of Jalisco, to the Michoacan port city of Lazaro Cardenas, an official with the state Public Safety Secretariat told Efe.
The bus crashed into the rear of a semi-trailer that was apparently parked on the shoulder of the road, killing seven of the passengers, including a 3-year-old boy.
Six people died at the scene, while the seventh victim - identified as Marlene Tapia, 27 - expired at a hospital in the city of Uruapan, the source said.
The injured were transported to medical centers in Uruapan and Arteaga, while the two drivers of the vehicles involved in the accident fled the scene.
