This week the Chilean government released it damage assessment of the massive 8.8 earthquake that occurred on February 27, 2010. According to the International Labor Organization of Chile, 89,000 jobs were lost and some 22,000 gained in reconstruction work, netting a loss of 67,000 jobs.
Most of the jobs lost were in the retail, hospitality and the food industry. Many businesses continue to struggle to reopen 5 months after the quake. The afternoon, 90 second quake devastated the central southern region of the country leaving an estimated 520 people dead, hundreds of aftershocks and massive damage to buildings and infrastructure.
