Six women are currently serving prison terms in Guanajuato for having an abortion, a procedure that is legal in Mexico City. The six women have all served between three and eight years of their 25-30 year sentences for Homicide.
“We’re going to put in direct appeals to the federal judiciary,” Veronica Cruz, the director of the Centro Las Libres, which provides assistance to the women and to another 160 Guanajuato women facing abortion-related charges, told Efe.
Abortion is treated vastly different through out the 32 separate jurisdictions in Mexico. Conservative led central Mexican state Guanajuato treats abortion as a criminal offense while in Mexico City it is legal.
“The government always has denied that it imprisoned people for the crime of abortion. We had to go from prison to prison to verify it,” said the Centro Las Libres director. Of the six cases being appealed, two are the result of rape and four were accidental pregnancies.
