Five men and two women were fatally shot inside a residence in Rio de Janeiro’s Realengo neighborhood, Brazilian police said Friday.
The victims, ranging in age from 24 to 37, were found on a terrace of the home, which neighbors described as a drug den.
Three vehicles pulled up outside the residence around 11:00 p.m. Thursday, according to witness accounts.
Several hooded men carrying guns got out and climbed onto the roof of one of the vehicles to vault over a courtyard wall and enter the home.
Neighbors next heard screams and the sound of gunfire.
The residence was home to a couple who often had friends over to use illegal drugs, the neighbors said.
The couple, who were among those slain Thursday night, recently lost custody of their children due to the parents’ drug use.
Police found small quantities of marijuana inside the home, as well as drug paraphernalia and a motorcycle, the detective in charge of the case, Pablo Rodrigues, told reporters.
“We don’t rule out any hypothesis as motive for the crime,” he said.
