40% of Pregnancies in Argentina Terminated by Abortion, Double the Latin American Average

A Human Rights Watch (HRW) report shows that Argentina continues to have the highest rate of abortion throughout Latin America, terminating 40% of all pregnancies by illegal abortion.  “In Argentina, abortion has become a method of contraception,” stated HRW.  This is not only a legal issue since most abortions are illegal in Argentina but also a woman’s health issue, abortion is the leading cause of death amongst pregnant women.

In Argentina a doctor can terminate a pregnancy only when the life of the mother is at stake or the pregnancy is the result of rape.  There are many Argentineans that want to decriminalize abortion, though it would not lead to a lower abortion rate experts say.  Woman’s right activists feel more access to contraceptives is the answer to lowering the abortion rate
