The Dominican Republic is reporting an earthquake measured at 4.9 struck about 2 hours ago, local time 10 am, near San Francisco de Macoris, Duarte.
The USGS indicates the quake was only 15 miles below the ground resulting in shaking felt throughout the area. The quake occurred some 52 miles north of the capital city of Santo Domingo.
The last major earthquake to strike the Dominican Republic was on August 4, 1946 when an 8.1 earthquake killed over 100 people and left thousands homeless. Most recently a minor earthquake was reported back on June 28, 2013 measuring 3.5.
No reports of injuries or damages thus far.
