The Dominican Attorney General’s Office arrested four women who used five children to beg for money on the streets of this capital.
Prosecutors have asked that the accused, a Dominican and three of Haitian nationality, be held without bail, the AG’s offices said Friday in a communique.
The women were arrested in an operation carried out on various streets of Santo Domingo, according to the statement.
The AG’s office called on citizens to continue informing the authorities about such cases, especially those involving boys and girls under 8.
Authorities said that those in custody will be handed over to the judiciary, while the children who were rescued - a girl and four boys ranging in age from 1 to 5 years - were taken to a government shelter.
