The Puerto Rico Police Department on Monday is investigating a quadruple murder in Piñones, a tourist locale near San Juan where just a week ago four other people were slain.
The PRPD said that among the dead is Carlos Javier Verdejo, 38, one of the organizers of “Pedaleando por la Paz,” an initiative organized to call for an end to violence in Piñones and in the adjacent San Juan suburb of Loiza.
Ironically, Verdejo was armed with a handgun at the time of his death.
Two of the other victims killed in front of the Bamboobei restaurant were identified as Juan M. Nieves Carrillo, 32, and Noel Vazquez Rey, whose age was not specified.
A fourth victim of the massacre still has not been identified, and the wife of one of the fatalities, Sheila Tapia Rivera, sustained a gunshot wound and is in stable condition at the Puerto Rico University Hospital.
This is the second similar incident in Piñones in just a week, with two teenagers and two adults being shot to death on Sunday morning, Oct. 13, 2013.
Piñones has about 100 restaurants and food stands, which attract tourists and visitors from the surrounding vicinity, especially on weekends.
Authorities are making an effort to contain the violence affecting the surrounding low-income municipality of Loiza.
This past weekend around Puerto Rico 15 people were murdered and 13 others were wounded, according to figures provided on Monday by the PRPD
So far this year, 724 people have died violently, down slightly from the 779 deaths registered by this time last year.
