A 16-year-old girl died Friday of injuries after being struck by lightning at the Argentine seaside resort of Villa Gesell, bringing the death toll from the incident to four, authorities said.

Priscila Ochoa died this morning at Villa Gesell’s Arturo Illia Municipal Hospital, some 300 kilometers (180 miles) from the Argentine capital, as the result of cardiorespiratory failure, town Mayor Jorge Rodriguez Ernetta said.

“We had her on life support, the doctors made an enormous effort. We knew the prognosis wasn’t good…we did everything possible,” he told the media.

The teenager was admitted Thursday in critical condition due to injuries from the lightning strike on the beach that left three people dead almost instantly and more than a score injured.

The other three fatalities were Gabriel Rodriguez, 20, Nicolas Elena, 19, and Agustin Fabian Irustia, 17.

Another 20 people remain hospitalized, one of them in intensive care, the official news agency Telam reported.

The lightning bolt struck the beach around 5:00 p.m. Thursday in an area of tents at the Afrika seaside resort where people had sought shelter as the storm approached.

Osvaldo Garcia, owner of the resort, said that “a ball of fire was seen and there was a tremendous noise,” and that one of the victims died “burned to death in a tent” and another “was playing soccer” when the tragedy occurred.
