A crane accident Wednesday at this Brazilian metropolis’ Arena Corinthians stadium, which will host the opening match of the 2014 World Cup, caused part of the roof to collapse and left three construction workers dead, officials said.
Debris from the collapsed roof fell on a vehicle carrying three workers, killing off of them, according to a preliminary report from emergency management personnel.
Five teams of firefighters and a Military Police helicopter were dispatched to the scene of the accident, which occurred around midday, they added.
Firefighters said the part of the roof that broke off was nearly 15 meters (50 feet) long.
The stadium, which will host six World Cup matches and is to be the future home of Sao Paulo club Corinthians, is expected to be completed in December.
