A Royal Caribbean cruise ship this week, rescued 23 Cuban migrants after their small boat was spotted near Jamaica.
According to Por Esto, a Mexican newspaper, the Cubans, originally from the Manzanillo and Bayamo areas, were trying to reach Honduras and had been traveling for three weeks in their makeshift boat.
Cynthia Martinez, a spokeswoman for the cruise ship according to the Huffington Post says that officials on the ship brought the people aboard and provided them with food and water as well as medical treatment. The U.S. coast guard was also alerted. Upon arrival in Cozumel, the migrants were turned over to Mexican immigration authorities.
