The International Olympic Committee voted Tuesday to drop wrestling from the Summer Games after the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The move caught observers and wrestling fans by surprise since the sport was a staple of the Olympics in Ancient Greece and has been included in the modern Games since they started in Athens in 1896.

Wrestling was not expected to be one of the sports dropped from the list of 25 Olympic core sports.

The modern pentathlon appeared to be the sport most likely to be dropped from the list of core sports, with badminton, taekwondo and table tennis also rumored to be on the IOC’s hit list.
