The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards nominees were recently announced and Selena Gomez & The Scene were nominated for Best Female Video for “Love You Like a Love Song”.

Gomez and her band are up against:

Rihanna - “We Found Love”
Katy Perry - “Part of Me”
Beyonce - “Love On Top”
Nicki Minaj - “Starships”

Young Latina – and fellow former Disney starlet – Demi Lovato was also nominated. Lovato is up for Best Video With a Message for her heartfelt song “Skyscraper”.

She will be up against:

K’Naan feat. Nelly Furtado - “Is There Anybody Out There”
Kelly Clarkson - “Dark Side”
Gym Glass Heroes feat. Ryan Tedder - “The Fighter”
Lil Wayne - “How to Love”
Rise Against - “Ballad of Hollis Brown.”

Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull’s video for “Dance Again” is up for Best Choreography

It serves to be noted that director, cinematographer, and photographer John Urbano was the director for One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” video which is nominated for two VMAs – Best Pop Video and Best New Artist.

Melina Matsoukas directed Rihanna’s “We Found Love” which is up for four VMAs – Video of the Year, Best Female Video, and Best Pop Video.

And though he may be just 24 years old, the director of Jack White’s “Sixteen Saltines”, A.G. Rojas’ work is being recognized with a nomination for Best Rock Video. “Sixteen Saltines” is Jack White’s solo debut.

One Direction and Alicia Keys have been confirmed as performers for the award show.
