Matthew Mezza has the entire community of Santa Monica in shock and dismay when he leapt to his death Friday after bolting from his baseball practice.

The high-school freshman was practicing with his team when he left abruptly and without provocation crossed the street to the Sheraton-Delfina Hotel, went to the 10th floor and leapt to his death with his teammates looking on. Some teammates heard him say he was going to jump off a building so they followed him.

By all early accounts Matthew was an excellent student, avid athlete and had many friends at the Santa Monica High School.  The tragic incident is under investigation.
