The Colombian navy found 13 illegal Cuban migrants who were traveling on a boat in Colombian territorial waters in the Gulf of Uraba, officials said Monday.

The Cubans were on board a fishing boat that was intercepted off the coast near Titumate, a village in Choco province near the border with Panama.

The migrants had set sail from Turbo, a port in the neighboring province of Antioquia and were headed for Acandi, Choco, navy Lt. Cmdr. Carlos Alberto Serrano said in a communique.

The Cubans intended to “continue their illegal journey to Central America,” added Serrano, who also said that the 13 people were handed over to Colombian judicial and immigration authorities.

The officer said that six days ago the navy had discovered two other Cubans in the area who were traveling on board a boat crewed by two Colombians.

The motorboat was intercepted in the Bocas de Tarena, another coastal portion of Choco province.
