Greek Arms Dealer Sentenced to 10 Years for Trying to Sell to FARC

A New York federal court on Wednesday sentenced Greek citizen Ioannis Viglakis to 10 years behind bars for trying to sell arms to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, judicial authorities said.

Viglakis, alias “Pablo,” was arrested in Panama in August 2012 at the request of the United States for allegedly providing support to a “foreign terrorist organization” which was not identified at the time.

Hollywood notables such as Lucy Liu, Renee Zellweger and Seth Meyers joined the elite of New York’s fashion community on Wednesday for an event honoring Venezuelan-born designer Carolina Herrera.

The Couture Council of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology presented Herrera with the 2014 Award for Artistry of Fashion during a luncheon at New York’s Lincoln Center.

Sofia Vergara Named Top-Earning Actress For Third Consecutive Year

Colombian-born Sofia Vergara, for the third consecutive year, is the highest-earning television actress in the United States, Forbes magazine said Wednesday.

The actress known for her role as the passionate Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the ABC comedy “Modern Family,” made $37 million between June 2013 and June 2014, with most of that total coming from endorsements and licensing contracts, according to Forbes.

Immigration activists agreed on Wednesday that it is “imperative” for President Barack Obama to act as soon as possible on immigration given the failure of Congress to approve comprehensive reform in that area.

“If the Republican Party is not doing its job, the president has the responsibility to protect the community,” Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), one of the most outspoken advocates on behalf of immigrants, said in a telephone press conference.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet on Wednesday announced a $510 million plan to rebuild the sectors of town affected by the devastating fire that swept through the coastal city of Valparaiso in April.

Bachelet, during a visit to Valparaiso, said that the plan will be carried out between the end of this year and 2021, adding that she was confident that at least 71 percent of the investments and work will have been completed by March 2018, when her term ends.

Actress Eva Longoria charged that employees of an Apple Store accessed her personal data in a case that intensifies the controversy over the hacking of personal online information after the publication on the Internet of racy and intimate photographs of about 100 celebrities.

Longoria said in an interview with the television program Access Hollywood that someone got in contact with her saying that they were a fan who worked in an Apple Store in San Antonio that that they had made “a dress” for the actress.

Chile’s Central Bank Admits Economy is Decelerating Faster Than Expected

Chile’s central bank on Wednesday said the economy is decelerating faster than anticipated and cut its 2014 growth forecast from a range of 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent to a more modest 1.75 percent to 2.25 percent.

In its latest Monetary Policy Report, submitted to the Senate, bank chief Rodrigo Vergara also forecast an inflation rate of around 4 percent for this year and predicted that investment will fall 4.2 percent and that consumption will rise just 2.6 percent.

President Dilma Rousseff is trying to scare Brazilians into giving her a second four-year term in the Oct. 5 election, main rival Marina Silva said Wednesday.

“The worst way of doing politics is through fear. I prefer to do politics with hope and confidence,” the PSB candidate said in an interview with news Web site G1.
