U.S. Sees First Case of Chikungunya Virus in Florida

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday said that the first case of the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus evidently arising in the United States has been confirmed in a person in Florida.

The CDC said that the patient is a man who apparently had not traveled abroad recently, and the federal agency is investigating how he became infected and is closely monitoring the possible appearance of other cases in the area.

Colombian Ex-Spy Chief Charged With 1989 Murder

A Colombian former intelligence chief has been charged in the 1989 assassination of presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan.

The Attorney General’s Office’s Delegate Unit before the Supreme Court filed the charges against retired Gen. Miguel Maza Marquez for the Aug. 18, 1989, murder in a public square in the town of Soacha, located on Bogota’s outskirts.

The influential Democrat who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday categorically rejected any modification of the law to bypass normal procedure to accelerate the deportation of undocumented migrant children.

New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, one of the key legislators in plans for comprehensive immigration reform, refuses to make legal changes in the asylum dispositions for unaccompanied minors from Central America, as some of his colleagues in Congress - both Republicans and Democrats - have proposed.

Fashion Show Features Models with Disabilities in Mexico

About 30 people with disabilities modeled clothing designed with their physical limitations in mind at the Feria Intermoda, a fashion show in the western Mexican city of Guadalajara.

The young models, whose disabilities range from blindness to motor problems, made their way down the runway, posing for photographers and interacting with the audience, which responded with applause.

Mob Torches Brazil Police Station, Vehicles Over Toddler’s Death

A mob of people enraged over the death of a 1-year-old girl in a law-enforcement operation set fire to the police station in the northeastern Brazilian town of Amargosa and also torched 30 motorcycles and 19 other vehicles, including a bus, authorities said Thursday.

Shortly after police shot the young child in the head during a pursuit of a suspected thief Wednesday night, dozens of people burst into the police station, took possession of the officers’ weapons and freed 16 individuals jailed inside the building.

Mexico to Receive $7 Billion Investment From Coca-Cola

The Coca-Cola Co. plans to invest nearly $7 billion in Mexico over the next four years, bringing total investment in the 2010-2020 period to $12.4 billion, Coca-Cola Mexico president Francisco Crespo said.

The funds will go into production lines, refrigeration equipment, trucks and distribution centers, Crespo said during the inauguration Wednesday of a PET recycling plant in Toluca, the capital of Mexico state.

J.Lo and sister Lynda Lopez are co-executive producers of “Los Jets,” a six-part series that premiered Wednesday night on NUVOtv, an English-language cable network aimed at Latinos.
