Marines killed at least eight suspected members of the Los Mazatlecos gang in a shootout in the northwestern Mexican state of Sinaloa, police spokesmen told Efe.

The shootout occurred Saturday morning in El Garbanzo, a community outside the city of Sinaloa de Leyva.

Colombian singer Shakira, who will perform in Sunday’s World Cup closing ceremony, said her boyfriend, Spanish soccer player Gerard Pique, was still trying to get over his team’s ouster from the tournament.

Spain, the defending champion, did not make it past the first round at the World Cup.

The Netherlands national team came in third in the 2014 World Cup with a 3-0 win over the Brazil squad, which was jeered out of Brasilia’s Mane Garrincha Stadium by the home team’s disillusioned fans.

Robin Van Persie in the 3rd minute cashed in on a penalty committed by Thiago Silva against Arjen Robben and put coach Louis Van Gaal’s team ahead early on, while Daley Blind, 14 minutes later, widened the gap to 2-0 and from then on it was no contest.

3 Suspected Cartel Gunmen Die in Shootout in Northwest Mexico

Three suspected members of the Meza Flores cartel died in a clash with Mexican marines in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, police told Efe.

The shootout occurred in the town of Estacion Naranjo.

Local miners suspended once and for all their attempt to save eight of their workmates, trapped in an unregulated gold mine in southern Honduras since July 2, due to the risk of further cave-ins.

“We decided not to continue the rescue attempt because of the danger,” one of the local miners who took part until this Friday in the rescue work, Esteban Estrada, told a press conference at the scene of disaster.

Mexican federal forces rescued 224 kidnap victims - mostly undocumented Central American migrants - and arrested nine suspects in two operations in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, officials said.

Authorities freed 205 migrants, including two Mexicans, in one of the operations, carried out Wednesday in the port city of Tampico, the national anti-kidnapping coordinator, Renato Sales, said at a press conference.

3 Injured During 6th Running of the Bulls in Pamplona

Three men were injured but none were gored in the sixth running of the bulls at the San Fermin festival on Saturday in the northern Spanish city of Pamplona, featuring bulls from the Fuente Ymbro estate.

Two of the injured, who were taken to the Navarre Hospital Complex, have been looked after for bruises to the right arm, according to the medical report from the hospital.

Ken Lou Castillo was 9 years old when he became the youngest inventor in Guatemala by patenting Mr. Fuego, a kind of ecological firewood made of recycled materials that when burned, harms neither the environment nor people’s health.

Mr. Fuego (Mr. Fire) won Lou Castillo membership in the Guatemala Inventors Commission as well as the Erick Barrondo Order, awarded by the Guatemalan government to outstanding youths.

Ace Felix Hernandez had another strong outing and got just enough run support as the Seattle Mariners edged the Oakland Athletics 3-2.

Hernandez (11-2), whose next start could be in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game, gave up six hits, struck out nine batters and walked two Friday night at Safeco Field in Seattle.

Spanish tenor Placido Domingo returned to Rio de Janeiro and, two days before the World Cup final, again delighted fans after 20 years away from the Brazilian city.

The time and place of his Friday concert were not scheduled by chance by this lifelong soccer fan and Real Madrid supporter. Domingo wished to associate his music once more with a World Cup and so chose the city where Argentina will face off against Germany on Sunday for the soccer championship at Maracana Stadium.

Spanish veteran big man Pau Gasol has rejected an initial contract offer from the Los Angeles Lakers and is reportedly trying to decide whether to sign with the Chicago Bulls or the reigning-champion San Antonio Spurs.

The free agent turned down a two-year contract offer from the Lakers, where he has played since the 2007-2008 season, that would have paid him slightly less than $10 million per season, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told Efe.

Cuba and Russia strengthened bilateral relations in the political and economic spheres with the official visit to Havana of President Vladimir Putin, who hailed the Caribbean nation’s “strategic” importance in Moscow’s foreign policy.

Putin, whose 2000 journey to Havana opened a “second phase” in ties between the two countries, chose Russia’s oldest ally in Latin America as the first stop on a regional tour that will also take him to Argentina and Brazil.
