Juan Carlos Varela Sworn in as New President of Panama

Juan Carlos Varela was sworn in Tuesday as president of Panama for the 2014-2019 term at a ceremony in a soccer stadium before special guests and thousands of spectators.

“I swear to God and country to faithfully comply with the Constitution and the laws of the republic,” Varela said before having the presidential sash placed on him by congressional speaker Adolfo Valderrama.

Venezuelan Doctors Demand Protection as Violence Increases in Hospitals

Venezuela’s FMV medical federation demanded Tuesday that the government guarantee security in hospitals after two people were riddled with bullets at a medical center.

At the same time, the FMV rejected the reaction by personnel at the affected hospital, who closed the emergency room in protest.

Wimbledon Shocker:  Nadal Out Defeated by 19 Year-Old Australian

Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, a 19-year-old ranked 144th in the world, took out Spanish world No. 1 Rafael Nadal 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the round of 16 at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

Nadal arrived at Wimbledon determined to make the final after losing in the first round last year to Belgium’s Steve Darcis, who was then the world No. 135, and being knocked out of the tournament in the second round in 2012 by Czech Lukas Rosol, who was ranked 100th in the world.

Colombian Murder Suspects of DEA Agent Extradited to U.S.

Colombia on Tuesday extradited to the United States seven suspects in the June 2013 murder of a Drug Enforcement Administration agent in the course of a robbery, authorities said.

The seven suspects will be brought before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Mexico Oil Revenue Decline First Half of 2014

Mexico’s oil revenues totaled 491.04 billion pesos ($37.8 billion) in the January-May 2014 period, down 0.50 percent from the same period last year, the Finance Secretariat said.

The drop was caused by a reduction of 4.2 percent to 165.78 billion ($12.76 billion) in payments by state-owned oil giant Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, to the Treasury, the secretariat said in a report covering government finances through May 31.

Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic to Work Together to Boost Film Industry in Region

Organizers of the San Juan International Film Festival will hold in October its first forum on Puerto Rico-Dominican Republic coproductions as a step toward boosting the moviemaking potential of these two Caribbean neighbors.

Their idea is to “promote the development of the film industry in both countries and in that way help expand the regional market,” the executive director of the long-running Puerto Rican festival, Jose Artemio Torres, told Efe.
