400 African Migrants Try to Break Into Spanish Enclave

Roughly 400 sub-Saharan migrants tried Wednesday to scale the barrier separating this Spanish city from Morocco, authorities said.

The attempt to enter Melilla occurred at around 6:15 a.m. at the north section of the perimeter, the Spanish central government’s delegation in the enclave said in a statement.

Argentine Conductor Barenboim Celebrates 50 Years With Berlin Philharmonic

Argentine-Israeli conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim on Wednesday celebrated the 50th anniversary of his first appearance with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Barenboim began his association with the German orchestra in June 1964 with a solo performance of Bela Bartok’s Piano Concerto No. 1 under the direction of Pierre Boulez.

Chile Knocks Out Spain the Defending World Cup Champs

Spain saw its hopes of a second consecutive World Cup title shattered here Wednesday with a 2-0 loss to Chile that signaled La Roja’s elimination from the 2014 tourney.

Stunned 5-1 by the Netherlands - the team they beat in the 2010 final - in their first group stage match, the Spaniards came up against a dynamic, ambitious Chilean side in the second contest.

Mexican Police Arrest 9 Drug Dealers, Murderer

Police arrested nine suspects on drug charges and another in connection with several murders in Mexico state, which surrounds the Federal District and forms part of the Mexico City metropolitan area, officials said.

The suspected drug dealers - eight men and a woman - are presumed to be members of a gang that sells drugs in the cities of Zinacantepec and Valle de Bravo, Mexico state Attorney General Alejandro Jaime Gomez said.

Troops Kill 3 Guerrillas in Southern Peru

Three guerrillas were killed in a clash with army troops in the southeastern region of Cuzco, the Peruvian armed forces Joint Command said Tuesday.

A civilian woman was wounded in the incident involving personnel from the army’s Special Intelligence Brigade and suspected elements of the Shining Path rebel group, the military said in a statement.

The dismembered body of an Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, leader in San Miguel Totolapan, a city in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, has been found, state prosecutors said.

Carlos Salanueva de la Cruz’s body was found in Santana del Aguila, a community outside the city of Ajuchitlan del Progreso, Guerrero Attorney General’s Office spokesmen told Efe.

Mexico Looks to China as Burgeoning Tequila Market

Mexico plans to “conquer new markets” with its national drink, tequila, with projections showing that China will be the liquor’s No. 2 importer in five years, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said.

“If we all do our part, it is forecast that 10 million liters of tequila will be exported to China within five years,” the president said during the celebration Monday of the Tequila Regulatory Council’s 20th anniversary in Guadalajara, the capital of the western state of Jalisco.
