Veterans gathered in Washington on Thursday to call for immigration reform that acknowledges the efforts of their immigrant comrades as well as the diversity and richness they contributed to the ranks of the U.S. Armed Forces, and they also asked for equal treatment for their families.

Veterans for Immigration Reform at a press conference presented a document in which they defended the legacy of immigrants in the military before beginning a series of meetings with lawmakers to press for immigration reform.

Puerto Rico Busts Drug Trafficking Ring, Arrests 28

Federal and local authorities arrested 28 people on Thursday around Puerto Rico for belonging to a drug trafficking organization.

The FBI spokesman on the island, Moises Quiñones, confirmed the arrests to Efe, adding that they were made after a federal grand jury issued an indictment.

FC Barcelona and Chelsea have reached an agreement for the transfer of Spanish international Cesc Fabregas to the London club for a fee of 33 million euros ($44.7 million).

Chelsea also could pay Barça an additional 3 million euros ($4.06 million) if the 27-year-old attacking midfielder plays in a pre-determined number of games over the course of the five-year deal.

Colombia Introduced to Device Used to Watch TV From Anywhere

Slingbox, which allows people to watch their favorite television channels from anywhere in the world, was presented for the first time in Colombia.

So-called “personal streaming,” made available via Slingbox by the U.S. firm Sling Media, will be tested in the Colombian market and later will be offered in other Latin American countries.

Washington Urges Central Americans Not to Send Children to U.S.

The U.S. government on Thursday urged Central American parents not to send their children to the United States alone or via people trafficking networks.

“My message to your readership, your audience of those who may have children in Central America whom they want to reunite with, is that illegal migration is not safe,” Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said at a press conference.

A device containing radioactive substances was stolen from a government research facility and authorities are working to track it down, Mexico’s No. 2 official said.

“We have the report regarding the theft of this material and the alerts and protocol we follow in these cases have already been implemented,” Government Secretary Miguel Angel Osorio Chong told reporters after speaking at a conference of state law enforcement chiefs and attorneys general.

Brazil needed a big assist from the referee to pull out a 3-1 win over Croatia here Thursday in the opening match of the 2014 World Cup.

The five-time champions also benefited from a sparkling performance by budding superstar Neymar, who scored two goals in his first World Cup appearance.
