Colombian Rebels Declare Cease-Fire During Presidential Elections

The FARC guerrilla group declared a new unilateral cease-fire with an eye toward the presidential election runoff to be held on June 15 in Colombia.

The cease-fire will be in effect from June 9 through June 30, FARC leader Timoleon Jimenez said in a letter to opposition presidential candidate Oscar Ivan Zuluaga, of the Democratic Center and a critic of the government’s peace negotiations with the guerrillas.

World Travelers Name Machu Picchu Most Desirable Destination

A travel Web site has selected the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in southeastern Peru as the destination that world travelers most want to see, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Magali Silva said.

Hostelworld.com asked users to vote on their top adventure travel destination in its “My Awesome Escape” contest, and the Inca site won by more than 1 million votes.

Spain’s King Juan Carlos, who announced last week that that he was abdicating in favor of his son, presided on Sunday over his last Armed Forces Day ceremony as supreme commander.

The king said last Monday he was abdicating in favor of his son, Felipe, after nearly 39 years on the throne.

Investigators found the bodies of at least 13 people in five clandestine graves outside Zumpango, a community in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, officials said.

The bodies were found after police received an anonymous tip from a caller, Guerrero Attorney General’s Office spokesmen told Efe.

Spanish crooner Julio Iglesias, the Latino entertainer who has sold the most albums worldwide, performed on the weekend in a more intimate setting in Punta Cana, a resort city in the eastern Dominican Republic.

The 70-year-old singer took the stage at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s Fillmore Ballroom at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, leading off with “Amor,” and running through a list of 19 more of his hits.

Brazilian model Alessandra Ambrosio plans to go from the runway to the big screen in a movie inspired by the life of Italian millionaire Alessandro Proto, the production company said.

Shooting begins in December and the film is expected to be released in the summer of 2016, Focus Features said in a statement.

Seven people being held captive were rescued and four suspected kidnappers were arrested by police in Mexico City, Federal District Public Safety Secretary Jesus Rodriguez Almeida said.

Police staged the rescue operation early Saturday in the Narvarte district, Rodriguez Almeida said.

Several of Colombia’s political groups on Saturday described as “historic” the fact that victims of the country’s armed conflict are at the center of peace talks in Havana between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, the first time in 50 years there has been an acknowledgment of victims by this armed group.

Ex-presidential candidate Clara Lopez of the leftist PDA party hailed the decision to provide a place for victims at the peace talks.

Researchers at the National Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu in southeastern Peru have discovered a previously unknown stretch of the Inca Road leading to the fortress, and whichc could ease access to that tourist destination, the Cuzco cultural authority said.

The new stretch of the Inca Road goes from the Wayraqtambo (Inn of the Winds) area on the other side of the mountain from the citadel to a platform where the archaeological site of Machu Picchu can be seen from a totally different angle, the Culture Ministry said on its Web site.

Pope Francis met in the Vatican City, Saturday, with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and accepted his invitation to visit the Latin American country.

Peña Nieto made the announcement to reporters after the 25-minute sit-down with the pontiff, the former archbishop of Buenos Aires and the first Latin American to reach the papacy.

Spain’s Cabinet approved a draft bill to permit dual citizenship to all Sephardic Jews who apply for it and to recognize that status for the entire time they are able to retain the nationality of their country of origin.

Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon said in presenting the draft legislation on Feb. 7 that this measure completes the reparation of “one of the greatest errors” in the history of Spain - the expulsion of the Jews in 1492.

The host described the Puerto Rican artist as “the ambassador of Latin American music” and joked that while the artist “is a vegetarian, these days he ate a tajin (traditional Moroccan dish) of chicken.”

International Summit in Mexico Focuses on Fighting Climate Change

Some 300 lawmakers from close to 60 countries are focused in Mexico City on achieving legislative changes in each of their nations that will help limit the rise of world temperatures, according to legislators consulted by Efe.

As part of the 2nd World Summit of Legislators, called by the Global Legislators Organization, or GLOBE, that is being held in the Mexican capital and which concludes on Sunday, the lawmakers said they seek to establish commitments to pass laws that can best deal with the great global challenges of sustainable development.
