Argentine Police Rescue Teen Who Spent 9 Years Locked in a Garage

A 15-year-old girl was rescued Wednesday after spending nine years locked in a garage, being fed only brewer’s yeast, bread and water, and bearing signs of physical violence, Argentine police said.

The teen, who police said had only a dog and a monkey for companionship in her prison, weighed just 20 kilograms (44 pounds) and suffered from medical underdevelopment due to the lack of food and education.

The prime suspect in the murder of a U.S. woman who traveled to Nicaragua on a church mission was arrested Wednesday, a senior police officer said.

Fernando Antonio Aburto Reyes killed Karen Colclough in the course of a robbery, the National Police’s Glenda Zavala told a press conference.

President Santos Denies Garcia Marquez Battling Cancer

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Wednesday denied a newspaper article stating that Gabriel Garcia Marquez has been diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer, saying the Nobel literature laureate is merely recovering from a bout of pneumonia.

Santos made the remarks about the Colombian writer, who has resided in Mexico for decades, in statements to reporters in the southwestern city of Popayan, capital of Cauca province.

A violent gang of gunmen who have been terrorizing a community of Brazilian Indians since they returned to their ancestral land has been caught on video. The gang is believed to be employed by the rancher occupying the Guarani Indians’ land, which was seized from them in the 1970s, and cleared for ranching.

Last Monday one of the members of the community of Pyelito Kuê managed to film the gunmen driving past their village and firing shots at them in broad daylight.

President Barack Obama marked Wednesday’s one-year anniversary of the introduction of the bipartisan immigration reform approved last June by the Senate by calling on Republicans in the House of Representatives “to listen to the will of the American people” and bring the measure to a vote.

“The Senate’s commonsense agreement would grow the economy by $1.4 trillion and shrink the deficit by nearly $850 billion over the next two decades, while providing a tough but fair pathway to earned citizenship to bring 11 million undocumented individuals out of the shadows,” the president said in a statement.

Federal Authorities have reported that Uriel Mendoza Chavez, mayor of Apatzingán, and Noah Octavio Aburto Inclan, mayor of Tacámbaro have been arrested for extortion.

Chavez is accused of extortion, and allegedly of demanding monthly payments from several aldermen in support of the Knights Templar Drug Cartel.  They also state that Aburto Inclan is in police custody for for his alleged responsibility in the crime of embezzlement to the detriment of the City of Tacámbaro.

The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) also arrested, Secretary of the Interim Government and former Governor Jesus Reyna.

The PGR said in a statement it found a relationship between Reyna Garcia and the criminal organization of the Knights Templar.

Venezuela’s government and opposition representatives met for the first time behind closed doors to continue their dialogue aimed at resolving the political conflict behind two months of protests that have left 41 people dead and hundreds more injured.

In a four-hour meeting held with the foreign ministers of Colombia, Brazil and Ecuador and the papal nuncio in Caracas as mediators, the government rejected the amnesty law presented by the opposition designed to secure the release of people they consider to be “political prisoners.”

The navy of the Dominican Republic announced Wednesday that it detained 52 undocumented migrants from Haiti and Cuba who were trying to travel illegally to the neighboring island of Puerto Rico, a U.S. commonwealth.

A group of 13 Cubans was surprised on Tuesday afternoon on Saona Island as they were preparing to travel to Puerto Rico in a Zodiac boat, which would have been - the navy said - “a risky and dangerous trip.”

A tremendous individual effort by Welsh international Gareth Bale with six minutes left in regulation gave Real Madrid a 2-1 victory over archrival FC Barcelona in Wednesday’s 2014 Copa del Rey final.

Bale’s first goal against Barça since joining the Blancos last summer from England’s Tottenham Hotspur will become part of the lore of the Copa competition, which Real Madrid has won 19 times.

A 3-year-old boy in the northeastern town of Las Terrenas died and his mother was seriously injured when they were attacked by three pit-bull dogs, Dominican police said Wednesday.

The deadly attack took place at a villa owned by a French citizen where Patricia Alvarado, 24, worked as a maid.
