Puerto Rico Working on 300 Foot Tall Christopher Columbus Statue

Puerto Rico is working discretely on the installation of a monumental likeness of Christopher Columbus that will stand as high as the Statue of Liberty.

The enclave selected for the historic project is the municipality of Arecibo, on the island’s northern coast. The statue - which is 90 meters (295 feet) high, weighs 600 tons and was crafted by Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli - will be erected on one of the beaches there.

Immigration Activists to March From Phoenix to Immigrant Detention Center

Activists and leaders of efforts to defend immigrants on Wednesday in Phoenix began a march that will end on April 5 at Arizona’s Eloy Detention Center, where they will demand an end to deportations and approval of immigration reform.

“We must fight. It’s unfair that so many people are in jail just for wanting to work and earn money for their families,” Martha Espinoza, 63, told Efe as the procession prepared to leave Phoenix.

Colombian Oil Industry Denies Responsibility for Drought

Colombia’s oil sector is not responsible for the severe drought blamed for the death of more than 20,000 animals in the eastern province of Casanare, the trade group representing the industry said Wednesday.

“Oil operations are not creating the drought. We consume water, of course, but in very low quantities,” ACP President Alejandro Martinez Villegas said at a conference on the drought.

Salvadoran Inmate Murders Girlfriend During Conjugal Visit

A convict serving time at Metapan prison murdered his girlfriend during a conjugal visit, a spokesman for the Salvadoran Attorney General’s Office told Efe Wednesday.

Authorities launched an investigation to determine the motive for the killing, the spokesman said.

Seven members of a gun-trafficking band in greater San Juan were arrested Wednesday in an operation undertaken by officers with Puerto Rico’s NIE investigative agency.

NIE director Brenda Leon Suarez said in a communique that officers successfully carried out an operation to bust the criminal group that had operated in the municipalities of San Juan, Levittown and Bayamon.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) on Wednesday warned his Republican colleagues in the House of Representatives that if they don’t hold a vote on immigration reform before the July 4 recess President Barack Obama will take matters into his own hands.

“There are concrete ways within existing law to help keep families together and spare U.S. citizens from losing their wives and their husbands and their children to deportation,” Gutierrez said in a speech on the House floor.

Real Madrid triumphed 3-0 here Wednesday over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of a Champions League quarterfinal clash, taking a giant step toward avenging their loss to the German club in last year’s semis.

Blancos striker Cristiano Ronaldo, playing his 100th Champions League match, scored his 14th goal of the current edition of the European tourney, equaling the mark set in 2011-2012 by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

Netflix to Create Original Series About Pablo Escobar

Digital content provider Netflix said it planned to produce a series about Pablo Escobar, the most notorious drug lord in Colombia’s history, that will be directed by Brazilian Jose Padilha and star his countryman, Wagner Moura.

“Narcos” will be filmed in Colombia and make its debut in early 2015, with the first season consisting of 10 episodes, Netflix said in a statement.
