Venezuelan Boxing Champ Antonio Cermeño Killed in Botched Kidnapping

Venezuela’s Antonio Cermeño, a former World Boxing Association world champion in two different divisions, was found murdered Tuesday on a highway near Caracas, police said.

Cermeño was kidnapped Monday night as he was leaving a store on the east side of Caracas with three family members, who later managed to escape.

Spain’s Prehistoric Altamira Cave Re-Opens After a Decade for Limited Public Viewing

Archaeologists rejoin!  The amazing prehistoric Altamira cave has re-opened for limited public viewing after being closed for over a decade. 

The cave is located in northern Spain and contains jaw-dropping, well-preserved polychrome prehistoric cave paintings.  The cave was discovered in 1868 by a hunter and contains abstract shapes and animal depictions painted some 13,000-to-35,000 years ago by cave dwellers.  Altamira is located in Cantabria, Spain and is a World Heritage site managed by UNESCO.

Alice Bian’s business is death. She boasts that her Valley Boulevard funeral supply store in Alhambra, Calif., carries the United States’ most extensive collection of Chinese afterlife-ritual items and clothes for the deceased: silk capes and pants with drawstrings that make it easy to slide over a body in rigor mortis, high-heel shoes without padding since they will never touch the ground, red blankets to frighten away evil spirits on the journey to heaven.

If anyone should know about the end of life, it’s Bian. Before the Chinese immigrant focused on the dead, she cared for the dying as a nurse’s assistant at a local convalescent home.

Salma Hayek’s Brother Involved in Deadly Crash that Takes Life of Grammy-Winning Art Director

Sami Hayek, the younger brother of Mexican actress Salma Hayek was involved in a deadly car crash that resulted in the death of his passenger on Sunday afternoon.

The 40-year-old brother of Salma was driving his $165,000 sports car in Los Angeles when he allegedly lost control of his vehicle taking him into oncoming traffic on Sunset Boulevard.  The 2006 Ford GT sports car crashed into a pick-up truck driven by Alvin Javier Gomez.

Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, the world’s Most Wanted Drug Lord, was cooking breakfast along with his beauty queen wife when police smashed down the door of the condo they were hiding in Mazatlan, Mexico on Saturday morning.

When Guzman was snatched by authorities, breakfast was still on the stove, an indication of his abrupt departure. Guzman had a military-style assault rifle with him but did not fire a shot.  He did, however, attempt to escape through a network of tunnels hidden beneath his bathtub, Mexican officials said.

Colombian President Santos Taps Former Cabinet Member as His Re-election Running Mate

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Monday named former Cabinet member German Vargas Lleras as his running mate in his bid for a second four-year term.

Santos made the announcement with Vargas Lleras at his side during a speech to the Good Government Foundation in Bogota.

10,000 Year Old Rodent Fossils Found In Paraguay

Riso Cave in the Paraguayan Chaco has been seen as an unspoiled treasure by paleontologists ever since rodent remains were unexpectedly found there next to the fossil of a giant sloth of the Pleistocene Epoch.

The discovery of five jaws measuring 1.5 centimeters (3/5 of an inch) each and with almost all their molars intact, from four diminutive rodent species that lived around 10,000 years ago, constitutes the first fossil find of this type in Paraguay.

Military Helicopter Crashes Killing 4 Soldiers in Colombia

Four soldiers died in a helicopter crash in central Colombia that was apparently caused by bad weather, the army said Monday.

The accident occurred in Mesetas, a city in Meta province, while the soldiers were providing air support to troops fighting the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, guerrilla group.
