Mexican Economy Sees Worst Growth in 4 Years

Mexico’s gross domestic product expanded 1.1 percent in 2013, below the official forecast of 1.3 percent growth and the smallest annual gain since the global recession of 2009, the National Statistics Institute, or Inegi, said Friday.

In the fourth quarter of last year, the country’s GDP rose 0.7 percent in real terms compared to the same three-month period of 2012.

Pope Francis received Friday in a private audience Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who formally invited the Argentine pontiff to visit her country during the World Cup soccer championship, which begins June 12.

She invited the pope to see the inaugural game at Sao Paulo’s Arena Stadium or any of the matches contested by the Argentine national team, Brazilian sources said.

CNN reported Friday that the Venezuelan government has revoked the press credentials of seven of its journalists in the Andean nation.

The journalists are employed by CNN International and CNN en Español.

Republican Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart said that a number of his GOP colleagues in the House of Representatives are ready to tackle immigration reform, the Washington Post reported Friday.

“Can you draft legislation that has serious border and interior security, with sufficient leverage to force this or future administrations? I think we have drafted a way to actually do that,” the South Florida lawmaker told the Post’s Greg Sargent.

Spain Welcomes 3.1 Million Tourists in January

Spain welcomed in January some 3.1 million foreign visitors, 12.3 percent more than in the same month of 2013, the Industry, Energy and Tourism Ministry said Friday.

The amount sets an all-time record for the first month of the year, topping the previous best established in January 2008 with 2.9 million visitors.

A clandestine grave near the western Mexican metropolis of Guadalajara holds at least 15 bodies, the Jalisco state Attorney General’s Office said Friday.

The grave lies 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from the intersection of two highways in the Guadalajara suburb of Tlajomulco de Zuñiga, the AG’s office said in a statement.

Eight people have died and 137 injured in incidents related to the anti-government protest marches taking place in Venezuela’s streets since Feb. 12, Attorney General Luisa Ortega said Friday.

On Friday, 80 people will appear in court and another 24 defendants have been ordered held without bail, she said during her weekly program on Union Radio.

Spain’s Pau Gasol will remain a member of the Los Angeles Lakers through the remainder of the 2013-2014 season after the team did not find a good enough deal for the center before the NBA’s trade deadline.

But the 33-year-old’s remaining time with the rebuilding team, which is far out of playoff contention with a record of 18-36, could still be short-lived because he becomes a free agent on July 1.

Mexican and U.S. authorities have arrested long-time fugitive and Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” (Shorty) Guzman, U.S. media reported Saturday.

Guzman was captured alive Friday night at a hotel in the Pacific resort city of Mazatlan, according to the reports.

50 Culinary Teams Celebrate 7th Barbecue Cook-Off in Puerto Rico

More than 50 culinary teams, professional and amateur, will take part this weekend in San Juan’s barbecue cook-off that organizers say will be the biggest in the Caribbean.

The 7th Cattlemen’s Caribbean BBQ Competition will be held at the San Juan Convention Center and is planned to be “a massive gastronomic and marketing event,” according to its director Alexis Garcia. Prizes will be awarded in 10 categories.

Salsa star Marc Anthony was the big winner at the 26th Premio Lo Nuestro Awards gala, taking home four prizes, while Colombia’s Carlos Vives and Spaniard Alejandro Sanz went empty-handed despite having been two of the top favorites with five nominations each.

The creator of “Vivir Mi Vida” won four of the five awards he was after, including Album of the Year for his disc “3.0,” Song of the Year, and Artist of the Year in the Tropical category.

Mexican navy personnel apprehended a reputed lieutenant of a senior figure in the Sinaloa drug cartel, police sources told Efe.

Jesus Peña, thought to be a top enforcer for the cartel, was arrested at a home in Culiacan, capital of the western state of Sinaloa.

Colombian President Says Foreign Investment in Mining Sector Up 21 Percent

Foreign direct investment in Colombia’s mining sector grew 21 percent in the first nine months of 2013 from the same period of 2012, President Juan Manuel Santos said.

“We’re talking about more than $2.3 billion” in investment between January and September of last year, according to the president, who said the flow of FDI to the sector remained strong despite a drop in global metal prices in recent years.

Captives Rescued From Kidnappers in Mexico

Federal Police rescued two kidnapping victims and arrested their captors, the secretary of Mexico’s National Public Safety System said.

The successful police operation place Wednesday in Mexico City’s Tlalpan neighborhood, Monte Alejandro Rubido Garcia said.
