Colombian President Announces Plans for Reelection in 2014

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos announced Wednesday that he will seek reelection in the 2014 elections.

“I’m doing it because I’m convinced that we’ve advanced sufficiently and that it’s finally possible to arrive at that future of prosperity and peace that all we Colombians deserve,” said the president in a radio and television address.

President Barack Obama’s proclaimed readiness to accommodate a piecemeal approach to immigration reform to facilitate its approval in the GOP-controlled House of Representatives has been received with skepticism by Republicans.

Pro-reform activists, in the meantime, have interpreted Obama’s approach as one more example of the president’s flexibility and willingness to work with the Republicans.

PEW REPORT- Remittances to Latin America Recover—but Not to Mexico

1. Overview

Total Remittances Received in Latin America and Mexico, 2000-2013Remittances to Spanish-speaking Latin American countries overall have recovered from a decline during the recent recession, with the notable exception of Mexico, according to World Bank data analyzed by the Pew Research Center.

Migrants’ remittances to Mexico, an estimated $22 billion in 2013, are 29% below their 2006 peak. For all other Spanish-speaking Latin American nations overall, the 2013 estimate of $31.8 billion slightly surpasses the 2008 peak.

Puerto Rico to Receive Economic Advisers from Washington

The White House will send a team of experts to Puerto Rico in December to help the local government manage the U.S. commonwealth’s years-long budget and economic crisis.

“This in no way signifies federal control over the island’s economy,” Puerto Rico Chief of Staff Ingrid Vila Biaggi said Wednesday, insisting that the advisers would offer “strategic consultancy.”

A former head of Colombia’s now-defunct DAS security agency was arrested Wednesday on charges he was involved in the 1989 assassination of presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan.

Agents went to the Bogota home of retired Gen. Miguel Maza Marquez just hours after Attorney General Eduardo Montealegre said the one-time spy chief was to be held pending trial.

Police Seize 2 Tons of Cocaine in Ecuador

Ecuadorian police on Wednesday seized two tons of cocaine and arrested five people in the southwestern province of El Oro, Ecuador’s Interior Ministry said.

In the operation, which was carried out in the municipality of Pasaje, authorities also confiscated $160,000 in cash, according to information the ministry posted on Twitter.

Thalia to Receive a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Mexican pop star Thalia will receive her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in a ceremony on Dec. 5, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced.

Thalia will join other Hispanic artists that have garnered that same honor, including Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Shakira, Penelope Cruz and Mexicans Vicente and Alejandro Fernandez, Katy Jurado and Rafael Mendez.

Spain’s Queen Sofia honored compatriot Antonio Banderas and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for their contributions to ties between the United States and Spanish-speaking countries.

The Queen Sofia Spanish Institute Gold Medals were bestowed during a gala in New York hosted by fashion designer Oscar de la Renta and featuring Michael Douglas and Henry Kissinger as presenters.

New Mobile App Provides Spectacular Images of Chile’s Atacama Desert

Spectacular images captured by telescopes at Chile’s many astronomical observatories are available to users of Android devices through a new app developed by Fundacion Imagen de Chile.

The Chile Mobile Observatory offers 100 images of stars, galaxies and nebulas, the Fundacion said in a press release.
